Category: CME
Sub-Category: ONCO
Date: 5/27/2006
Time:1:00 PM to 1:45 PM
Facility: Moscone Convention Center
Location: Gateway Ballroom 102
Description: At the conclusion of this case-based presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe four common physical findings of lymphedema
Distinguish between lymphedema, lipedema and edema of other etiologies
Explain the physiologic mechanisms inherent in lymphedema formation

This presentation will spotlight lymphedema, a commonly misdiagnosed or overlooked condition either inherited, (primary) or acquired (secondary). Since primary lymphedema is relatively uncommon, pictorial case studies will focus on secondary lymphedema resulting from obesity, surgery, malignancy, infection or even seemingly trivial trauma. Attendee will learn to distinguish lymphedema from other edematous states such as lipedema and explain the fascinating pathophysiology underlying the lymphedematous condition. Lymphatic anatomy and physiology will be related to treatment. A comprehensive review of the treatment modalities available for lymphedema will be explored. At the conclusion of this presentation, attendees will have an expanded appreciation for the complexity of lymphedema and appreciate the myriad of treatments available to patients with this condition.
Speaker(s): Kathleen A. Smalky M.D., M.P.H.
