Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Locate four web sources for up to date review of genetic disease. Describe three search methods for finding genetic information List at least two resources for up to date genetic information for patients Identify four resources for maintaining or improving knowledge of current genetics Describe how to locate genetic counselors, tests, costs of tests and current ethical issues surrounding medical genetics.
As clinicians we are all concerned with keeping up to date with the ever expanding discoveries in the field of genetics. At times, the challenge of the “genetic revolution” and integrating the new genetic knowledge into direct patient care can seem overwhelming. To paraphrase a famous quote…Genetics, like change, is a dragon. You can either stand still and be eaten, or hop on board and take a ride. As a group, we will explore Web resources to answer practical, real- life genetic questions arising in the care of internal medicine, surgery, ob-gyn and pediatrics patients. A working knowledge of these Web based resources will allow you to not only ride the genetic dragon but also tame it for your professional growth in the best interest of your patients.
