Geriatrics for Surgical PAs: Pre-Op and Post-Op considerations    Home

Category: CME
Sub-Category: GERI/SURG
Date: 5/27/2006
Time:2:00 PM to 2:45 PM
Facility: Moscone Convention Center
Location: Gateway Ballroom 103
Description: At the conclusion of this presentation attendees will be able to:
List the common complications of hospitalized patients
Identify ways to assess and anticipate iatrogenic complications preoperatively
Recognize ways to reduce risk of developing postoperative problems

Care for the older patient is complex. Older patients have more co-morbidities, take more medications, and are at risk for complications rarely seen in the younger population. Older patients are at particular risk for malnutrition, infections, deconditioning, delirium, polypharmacy, and pressure ulcers. Therefore standard approach to patient care should adjust for the older patient in order to avert complications. During this session, we will review common geriatric syndromes encountered in the perioperative setting. We will learn a systematic assessment relevant to patients in this population and preventative interventions to optimize patients postoperative outcomes.
