Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Discuss the DSM-IV criteria for autism and related developmental disorders Formulate an appropriate diagnostic work-up, including laboratory, imaging, and psychometrics Identify current treatment options and evaluate their efficacy Discuss the research surrounding the current focus on immunization safety and autism
As the prevalence of autism and pervasive developmental disorders increases in the United States, Physician Assistants are becoming more of an integral part of the diagnosis and treatment planning for these patients. Understanding the medical and psychosocial implications of this diagnosis will allow PAs to provide accurate, evidence-based information in a supportive and empathetic context to the patients and their families. An overview of the diagnostic criteria will be provided, as well as recommendations for an appropriate diagnostic work-up. The current treatment options will be described. Finally, the “hot topics” related to autism will be discussed, especially related to areas such as immunization safety and autism, as well as “myths” related to etiology.
