Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Effectively screen patients for at-risk drinking, alcohol abuse, and alcohol dependence Deliver brief directed messages to patients urging them to decrease or stop drinking alcohol Determine the need for, and manage outpatient detoxification from alcohol List and discuss pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence Effectively refer a patient to self-help meetings and specialty treatment
Alcohol is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Most people with alcohol problems do not get identified, and those who are identified often receive no treatment. Speaking up, screening, asking patients about how substance use is affecting their life and providing intervention and referral services is good medicine. This is a case-based workshop on the clinical presentation and management of patients with alcohol problems.
