Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Discuss the various setting in which side-line medical support is needed Recognize potential areas of medical-legal risk while covering athletic events and how to avoid them Discuss common injuries and their side-line treatment Recognize potentially life-threatening sports injuries and how to manage them appropriately on the side-line Discuss the United Interscholastic League (UIL) requirements for pre-participation physical exams Recognize the abnormal pre-participation exam findings that should raise concern for the practitioner
Providing medical coverage for athletic events and teams can be a rewarding experience for the physician's assistant. This course will provide and overview of the settings where coverage is needed along with a review of the various injuries common to these settings. Potentially serious injuries will be stressed along with their immediate management. Practical tips for communicating with coaches, trainers and parents will be discussed. Ways to minimize medical-legal risk will be presented. Pre-participation physical exams will also be covered along with guidelines for deciding which athletes are fit to play.
