Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Discuss the importance of taking a sexual history from all patients List the key components of a comprehensive sexual history Discuss reasons for patient and clinician reluctance to discuss sexual matters Describe non-verbal strategies that have been shown to enhance comfort and disclosure Identify specific questions that can be used to ask patients about sex in a sensitive and respectful manner. This lecture will review the reasons why clinicians should talk with all patients about sex, and will consider the numerous factors that can interfere with effective communication. Recommendations for creating a comfortable atmosphere that enhances disclosure will be presented, including non-verbal strategies as well as specific questions that can be used to ask about sensitive topics in a non-judgmental and respectful manner.
