Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
List the common pathogens causing acute otitis media
Identify key criteria for diagnosing acute otitis media
Discuss management of acute otitis media pain
For suspected acute otitis media, identify which children should be treated with antibiotics
Explain what antibiotics are indicated for initial therapy of acute otitis media
Discuss appropriate antibiotic treatment of acute otitis media when initial therapy fails

Otitis media is a common childhood complaint, understanding the key pathogens and diagnostic criteria are essential for initiating appropriate treatment. Awareness of the management of pain associated with acute otitis media and what antibiotics are appropriate for use are also key in the treatment. Providers must become aware of the newer guidelines in treatment of this disease process.
