Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: Identify the various categories of impairment Discuss the frequency of impairment and risk factors for PAs Describe options for PAs who are supervised by physicians who they believe are impaired Discuss the issues unique to treatment of impaired healthcare providers
Healthcare providers are at high risk by virtue of practice environment and professional demands and expectations. The ready access to mood altering and psychotropic drugs increases the risk of substance abuse and dependence. This lecture will review the commonly used definitions of impairment used by state licensing boards what conditions constitute impairment, options available to physician assistants who may be experiencing impairment and the unique challenges to treatment. Medical, legal and ethical issues regarding reporting a colleague will be discussed. Specialized programs exist that are designed especially for healthcare providers.
