Description: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
appreciate the impact of chronic illness on human sexuality
communicate more effectively with patients about sexuality
assist patients in adjusting to changes in sexual function secondary to chronic illness

Sexuality is one of the most personal and important aspects of our patients' lives. This is especially the case for patients living with chronic illness, who will have questions, fears, and physical impairment related to sexual function. If left unattended, these sexual concerns can contribute to relationship distress, poor self-esteem, depression, non-adherence, and even a deterioration of the patient-provider relationship. Avoiding these problems requires validating the importance of sexuality, comfortably communicating about sexuality, and effectively evaluating and treating the sexual repercussions of chronic illness. Increasing these skills is the focus of this presentation.
