Ocular Trauma is a leading cause of vision loss. It is commonly encountered by primary care practitioners, especially in an Emergency Room or Urgent Care Center. In this lecture the clinical approach to a patient with an eye injury will be discussed. The principles of an eye exam will be reviewed, with particular attention to techniques helpful in examining an injured eye. The lecture will then cover specific types of eye injuries. The role of the primary care/emergency care practitioner in managing these injuries will be discussed, as will the proper timing of referrals for specialty care.
